Hollyhock House

Scope:  CSI provided structural evaluation, analysis, repair design and preparation of construction documents, per The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, for repairs of deteriorated elements in house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, built 1919-21.  Areas of repairs included semicircular stone masonry site wall, porch concrete beam, concrete steps on grade, unreinforced brick and tile walls and concrete foundations, wood-framed balcony, steel-, wood- and concrete-framed roof, and masonry parapets.  Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument, National Register of Historic Places, and National Historic Landmark.

Project Challenges & Solutions:  Design of repairs sensitive to the exterior and interior historic fabric were important.  With much of the rehabilitation of this important structure funded by grant money, the structural repairs were both cost-effective and reliable, freeing up project budget for restoration of further areas on the building.  CSI was accessible and responsive throughout the construction phase.
