Scope: CSI provided structural evaluation and investigation, analysis, repair design and preparation of construction documents, per The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties, for repairs of decay at the bases of the eight glue-laminated redwood column bents, designed such that removal of glazed roof and walls and wood framing not required. National Register of Historic Places.
Project Challenges & Solutions: The bases of the primary column bents were decayed within the steel supports at the top of the perimeter concrete retaining wall. Removal or replacement of the entire frame bent would have significantly altered the historic structure. The repair design consisted of transferring the vertical loads around the decay utilizing epoxy resin repair material to remaining competent areas of the wood columns to foundation. The repair design did not alter the exposed structure’s appearance.
